Submitted BY State Senator Randy Maxwell
Illegal immigration surged during the Biden administration, which led some states to allow illegal aliens to obtain CDLs. What has followed is an increase in the number of dangerous and deadly crashes involving commercial trucks both here in Indiana and across the country – that’s unacceptable.
This year, I supported a new law designed to keep dangerous illegal truckers off Indiana’s roads.
- Requires drivers to pass an English skills test in order to operate commercial motor vehicle in Indiana;
- Mandates the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to check with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and revoke a foreign person’s CDL if they receive credible information that the person no longer has legal status or documentation that was required to obtain the CDL in the first place; and
- Makes it a Level 6 felony for a foreign CDL holder to operate in Indiana if in the United States illegally.
This new law was the first of its kind in the nation, and as your state senator, I will continue to work with law enforcement, business leaders and experts to make Indiana roadways more secure so Hoosiers can travel to work, school and home safely.
