Lawrenceburg Public Library and United Way Dedicate Story Walk for Kids

By Ron Nicholson

The Lawrenceburg Public Library District and the United Way of Southeastern Indiana dedicated a new Story Walk at Todd-Creech Park next to the Lawrenceburg Community Center with a ribbon cutting, refreshments, and kids’ backpack giveaway. The June 3rd ceremony included remarks from Library Director Jake Moore, Shelia Bigelow, director of children’s services at the library, and CEO of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati Moira Weir. Story Walk, in the planning stages for years, brings the joy of reading and reading strategies to those who walk along the track and interact with the colorful stations. Each sign contains guidance on how to enhance children’s proficiency in and love of reading. Both Library Director Moore and UW CEO Moira Weir congratulated the team effort and community support that brought this project to fruition. They both emphasized how the project helped the library to reach beyond the walls of the building itself to include the entire community. “Here, children can learn and play and enjoy nature all at the same time,” Weir commented. Speaking to approximately fifty people, Weir expressed her appreciation to community leadership for working with the United Way to strengthen and improve our local community through programs such as Story Walk, which is available at any time for anyone who walks the paved track around the Babe Ruth Baseball Field.
