Historic Aurora Church Steeple Endangered

Community help is needed to preserve one of Aurora’s most cherished landmarks—the steeple of First Presbyterian Church in Aurora.

For generations, the church steeple has stood as a symbol of our town’s history, faith, and unity. It houses the historic “town clock,” a familiar and comforting presence that has marked the passage of time for countless residents and visitors alike. Today, this treasured structure faces a serious and immediate threat.

The steeple is currently in a state of significant disrepair, both inside and out, which has become a safety concern. Structural issues have made professional intervention critical. Without prompt action, there is a real risk of collapse, which could result in further damage to the building and pose danger to the surrounding community.

The Church is engaging qualified professionals to assess and restore the steeple, ensuring its structural integrity and preserving its historic character. However, the cost of these necessary repairs is substantial, and we cannot do this alone. Contractors anticipate needing at least $150,000 for the steeple, painting, and interior repair project. Estimates are a starting point, with the understading that once the work begins, the full extent of damage will be revealed. If money is collected over and above the repair costs, it will be split between 4th Street Foods (our weekly dinner for the community) and a savings account to be used for future restoration and repair of this historic (and aged) building.
