Gender transition procedures on children have grown at an alarming rate in the U.S. while other countries are scaling back their use. Gender transition puberty blockers and hormone treatments are not FDA-approved, and procedures – both hormones and surgery – carry serious physical risks and possible side effects including infertility, diminished bone health and increased risk for heart issues, liver issues and some types of cancer.
With this in mind, the Indiana General Assembly intervened to protect Hoosier children, passing Senate Enrolled Act 480 in 2023 to prohibit the performance of those procedures on minors.
Now, after a three-year legal challenge to that law, a federal judge has dismissed the remaining claims, and the safeguards enacted by the General Assembly remain fully in place.
This is an important victory for our state and, most importantly, for Hoosier children and families.
