Congresswoman Erin Houchin, a cosponsor of the Sunshine Protection Act, released the following statement after the House passed the legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.
“Twice a year, families have to adjust their schedules, parents lose an hour of sleep, and businesses and schools deal with unnecessary disruption,” said Rep. Houchin. “For our farmers, an extra hour of evening daylight can also mean more time to work the fields. Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is a commonsense change that gives Americans more daylight in the evenings to spend time with family, enjoy the outdoors, support local businesses, and participate in youth sports and community activities. I’m proud to support this bipartisan effort to end the twice-yearly clock changes once and for all.”
The Sunshine Protection Act permanently establishes Daylight Saving Time nationwide by eliminating the twice-yearly time changes that have been required under current federal law. States that have previously exempted themselves from observing Daylight Saving Time would retain flexibility under the legislation.
The Sunshine Protection Act now heads to the Senate for consideration.
